The scanning FM radio in a blue printed case: a moonlit little town wraps around the grille, so the finished radio looks like a storybook prop.

On the bench with this kit

Every control matches our wooden radio, but the panels here come printed with a deep-blue night scene, rooftops and a crescent moon over the speaker grille. Children who are not keen on painting get a radio that looks complete straight away, and it makes a cheerful piece on a bedroom shelf.

It is a favorite for school projects, too. The circuit is small enough to explain in a single poster, and the finished radio can tune in live during a class presentation, which tends to win the room over.

What builders get

  • Blue night-town print covers the case, no decorating needed
  • Searches and locks onto FM stations between 88 and 108 MHz
  • Extendable antenna, volume buttons and a power light on top
  • Great show-and-tell project: tunes in live in front of the class
  • Pieces press out of the sheet and join with a screwdriver only
