The kit most builders start with: a twin-driver Bluetooth speaker in a bare plywood case, assembled with plug-in leads and a screwdriver.

On the bench with this kit

Lay the parts out and the whole idea of a speaker is right there on the table: two round drivers with magnets on the back, a small green amplifier board, a battery box and the plywood panels that will hold it all. The included picture guide walks through the build in order, so a ten-year-old can follow it without a grown-up translating every step.

Once the rocker switch on the lid flips on, the board shows up in the phone's Bluetooth list and the box starts playing. The plain wood finish is deliberate. Plenty of builders spend a second afternoon painting it, adding stickers or writing their name across the front.

What builders get

  • Two full-range drivers and a stereo amplifier board pair with any phone or tablet over Bluetooth
  • Plug-in wire connectors, so there is no soldering iron anywhere near the table
  • Bare plywood case invites paint, markers and stickers after the build
  • Picture-by-picture booklet explains why the magnet makes the cone move
  • Rocker power switch on the lid and a separate battery box for four AA cells
