A small plywood radio with a telescoping antenna that scans the FM band on its own. The most-rated build on our bench, and the lowest price of the lot.

The board inside handles the clever part: press the channel button and it searches 88 to 108 MHz until it lands on a station. Builders assemble the case, seat the speaker behind the grille, connect the battery holder and slide the antenna up through the roof. Volume buttons, a power light and a switch sit along the top edge.

Finished, it measures roughly 3.5 by 2.4 inches, small enough for a nightstand and sturdy enough for a backpack. The bare wood face is ready for a coat of paint, a name stencil or a row of stickers.

What builders get

  • Auto-scan tuner covers the full 88 to 108 MHz FM band at the press of a button
  • Retractable antenna slides out of the roof for better reception
  • Power indicator, channel and volume controls along the top panel
  • Runs on two AA batteries and fits in a palm, about 3.5 × 2.4 inches
  • Plain plywood case is ready for paint, stencils or stickers
