Two wooden cars from one box: a racer with a wireless remote and a solar car that runs on sunshine. Built from smooth basswood with rubber tires.

On the bench with this kit

The remote-control car teaches the idea of a receiver: the handset talks to a small circuit panel under the chassis, which drives the motor forward and back. The solar car does the same job without a battery, pulling its power from the panel on its roof when it rolls into direct sun.

Both chassis are cut from non-toxic basswood with rounded edges, and the rubber tires grip on pavement as well as on the kitchen floor. Finished, each car is roughly 5.9 inches long, the right size for a driveway race.

What builders get

  • Remote-control racer with handset plus a sun-powered solar car
  • Smooth, rounded basswood pieces that press out cleanly from the sheet
  • Silent rubber tires grip indoors and out
  • Explains receivers, motors and solar cells with two cars you can race
  • Each car finishes at about 5.9 × 3.6 × 2.4 inches
